Apps for iOS devices for persons with disabilities

 

Vision Impairment: 

  • TapTapSee (free): utilizes mobile camera and VoiceOver to take a picture or video to identify it out loud. 
  • Be My Eyes (free): AI-powered or live on-demand visual assistance service to identify objects and spaces. Can also scan documents. 
  • Seeing AI (free): describes the world around you; can read print aloud.
  • Aira (free app, but service fee for use): live on-demand visual assistance service provided by live sighted, trained people. 
  • Dragon Anywhere (free): dictate documents on iPhone or iPad hands-free. 

 

Hearing Impairment:

  • Ava (free): allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to follow a conversation within a group without having to lip-read. Each participant in a conversation installs the app and uses the microphone to transcribe their conversation. 
  • RogerVoice (free for one hour, service fee for longer): live transcription of telephone conversations in more than 100 languages. Also can use voice synthesis for answering a call.
  • Subtitles Viewer (free): view subtitles in different languages in real time and text is highlighted. Subtitle TV, movies, etc.
  • Live Listen (free): feature as part of iPhone settings; use with Airpods, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Fit Pro. Can help you hear a conversation in a noisy area or across a room. 
  • CaptionMate (free): captioning phone conversations. Works on smartphones, tablets, regular phones. 
  • Live Caption (free): Captions in-person communication in real time to participate in conversations. 
  • Speak2See (free): recognizes speech and converts to large legible text. 


Mobility Impairment: 

  • Wheelmap (free): locates wheelchair accessible places such as restaurants, hotels, shops, salons, etc.  
  • WheelMate (free): locates accessible parking spots and restrooms.  

Reading Impairment:

  • Dyslexia Font Pal & Keyboard (free): dyslexic keyboard, record voice notes, dyslexic font for ease of reading, grammar and spelling corrector while writing.  
  • Dyslexia Reader Settings Test (free): change background color, font size, and font style on iPhone/iPad to improve reader experience. Dyslexic font helps user write and send messages.

 

GPS and Wayfinding:

  • Apple Maps (free): turn-by-turn navigation, allows users to activate Siri.
  • AroundMe (free): tells users what is near them.
  • AccessNow (free): world community-powered app that provides a database of accessible, barrier-free locations. Users can add and rate new locations. 
  • Where Am I At? (free): Maps your exact location by coordinates, address and altitude.
  • Where To? (free): finds and announces any type of place you are looking for, close to wherever you are. Map or list view by distance or augmented reality. Provides information on locations found. 
  • Nearby Explorer (free): provides directions and describes environment. No data connection needed.  

 

Memory Impairment:

  • MindMate (free): app with various features including brain workouts, nutrition, exercise, TV & music, My Diary, Reminders, HealthKit for seniors.
  • It’s Done ($2.99): app to remember whether everyday tasks have been done.
  • Find My iPhone/Device (free): tracks your wireless devices, enables you to send warning messages or tones to locate them.
  • Flashcards Deluxe ($3.99): create flashcards with pictures and sounds of anything or anyone.
  • Where Am I At? (free): Maps your exact location by coordinates, address and altitude.
  • Eidetic Spaced Repetition (free): using spaced repetition technique to help you memorize anything.
  • Google Keep (free): capture, edit, share, and collaborate your notes on any device, anywhere. Add photos, images, labels, reminders, voice memos, etc.
  • RecallCue (free): connects two devices between caregiver and recipient for scheduling reminders, file sharing, etc.
