Videos in Face to Face Courses
- Class lectures recorded during a live class session are not captioned, unless there is a specific accommodation for captions approved by the Office of Disability Access for a student in the class.
- Required videos are videos that students are required to watch. (This would not include class lectures recorded for student re-review) Required videos are captioned through MyMediasite via Verbit or through Canvas Studio.
- For directions on submitting a MyMediasite video for captions, see this the Freshdesk Solution.
- Captions in MyMediasite for required videos in face-to-face academic credit courses are paid for by the department where the course resides. This expense will be charged by DAI to the department at an average of $0.83 per minute for a two-day turnaround time. It is recommended that this cost be built into course fees.
- Captions for required videos can also be automatically generated by machine transcription by Canvas Studio. This will require editing by a faculty or staff member to satisfy ADA requirements for having captions that are correct and reviewed by a human. Captions generated in this way do not have a financial cost but can be time consuming to edit for accuracy. Editing is required to be ADA compliant for captions generated this way. Videos in Online Courses
- All required videos in online courses require captions for ADA compliance. These are requested through MyMediasite.
- For directions on submitting a video for captions, see this Freshdesk Solution.
- Captions for required videos in online academic credit courses are funded through student distance education fees so individual departments will not be charged.
Audio/Podcasts in Both Face to Face and Online Courses
- Accessibility best practices suggest that all audio files or podcasts used, no matter the class format, need to include a transcript.
- Many online audio files and/or podcasts include a downloadable transcript.
- If possible, email the owner of the audio files and/or podcast and ask if a transcript is available.
- In lieu of a transcript, captions can be added to an audio file. Canvas Studio is new tool available in UNTHSC Canvas that can add machine-generated captions to an audio file. For directions on adding captions in Canvas Studio, see this Freshdesk Solution.
